The Last Jedi [Mostly Spoiler Free] Review

In case you missed it (or avoided the internet last week),the latest installment of the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, came out and, while critics have loved it, fans reactions have been mixed (to say the least).

Love it or hate it, The Last Jedi smashed onto the scene, but failed to set a new box office record.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons to love the movie.

  1. The lightsaber battles
  2. Seeing Luke Skywalker back in action
  3. Rey’s story arc
  4. New uses of the Force [admittedly, I didn’t like one of them]
  5. The callbacks to the older movies were well handled
  6. The Last Jedi wasn’t just a rehash of Empire Strikes Back

And plenty of reasons to disparage it.

  1. The pacing
  2. Poe’s story arc
  3. The weak, whiny, and spoiled villains [i.e. Kylo Ren and Armitage Hux (who names a kid Armitage?)]
  4. Lack of starfighter dogfights
  5. Rey’s parents [admittedly, a hot button issue that is probably best avoided when discussing the movie with fans {though, even Rian Johnson left it open/ambiguous}]
  6. *Minor spoiler* No one lost a hand

At the end of the day, I got to watch a brand new Star Wars movie on a bigger screen than I’ll even own [or will ever fit into my house]. I will say this, The Last Jedi was better than the prequels (not surprising). Yet, Return of the Jedi remains my favorite movie in the franchise. Even the appearance of my favorite starfighter, the A-Wing, in The Last Jedi wasn’t enough to topple RTJ from first place. It might not be better than RTJ or ESB or ANH, but that could just be the nostalgia talking.

I’m still on the fence as to where TLJ ranks among the new films. I’ll need to watch a few more times to solidify its place in the rankings.

We saw The Last Jedi last Thursday night with an excited crowd, which made it fun. I agree about the pacing (a little lagged at times) but appreciate Luke’s internal & external journey in the film. Force Awakens still 2nd fav next to original Star Wars (whatever # it is in series!) 🌟🚀🌟
