Black Widow is Not a Damsel in Distress

If you haven’t seen the Avengers movies (or any of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) or read any of the comic books, you may not know that Black Widow is super hardcore.  Except, well, her name sort of gives it away…just don’t marry her (too soon).

The other day, Joss Whedon quit Twitter because “fans” of the Avengers were upset at the portrayal of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow…well, one part in particular that was a small portion of the movie as a whole.

Who cares?

Why is it such a big deal for someone to quit Twitter?  Is it because we cannot fathom existence without the approval of our followers?  Twitter, and the internet as a whole, has become a haven for cyberbullying [not just trolls] and taking things to their illogical extreme.  Though, Joss Whedon himself has stated that wasn’t his reason for dumping his account.

Yes, Black Widow was captured.  And yes, she was rescued.  So, on the surface, she appears to be the classic damsel in distress in need of a knight in shining armor.  I, however, am of the opinion that it was all part of her plan.

  1. She got captured but she wasn’t content to sit in a cell all day.  She’s a super spy, she could’ve gotten out whenever she wanted.
  2. She knew if they were going to defeat Ultron, they would need all of the Avengers, not just most of the team.  So she waited until her rescuer arrived.
  3. If she hadn’t waited to be rescued, her rescuer [trying not to reveal any spoilers] would have stuck to his original plan…the one he kept returning to all movie long.
  4. Scarlett Johansson was pregnant.  I’m sure it was difficult to conceal during filming (CGI and digital editing aside).  Maybe she needed time to rest?  Point is, well, I’m not really sure where I was going with that one…

So, no I don’t think she needed to be rescued.  I think, Mr. Whedon intended her to want to be rescued so her rescuer felt needed.  Or maybe everyone [including me] is just over-analyzing this; it is just a movie after all.

But, don’t take my word for it, take the Hulk’s (or else…?).

[I can’t tell you how many times I almost wrote Scarlet Witch or Scarlet Widow instead.  I can only imagine the difficulties on set.]
