Millennials vs. Baby Boomers

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but there’s definitely been a trend on the internet (cats?) not involving cats (is that possible?  …wait, porn?

).  Millennials vs. Baby Boomers.  It’s caused quite the battle of the memes.

It all stems from the Baby Boomers’ desire to give their kids everything they didn’t have while trying to get their kids to work just as hard as they did (plus a bafflement of social media) versus the Millennials’ entitlement and focus on social media (don’t forget rough job market [is it still bad?]).

So, I decided to make a list of all some of the things Baby Boomers and Millennials fight over and the lessons one generation can learn from the other.

  1. I didn’t have a lot of toys growing up vs. I had a lot of toys growing up.
    1. Baby Boomers want to give their kids more toys so they don’t have to share with their siblings.
    2. Millennials should strive to give their kids less toys.
  2. We didn’t have the latest stuff vs. we had the latest stuff before it was officially released.
    1. Sure, Baby Boomers didn’t have color TVs until they bought them, but I’m sure “I Love Lucy” was just as good in black and white (…probably).
    2. Millennials should give their kids used gadgets.  Who needs the latest tablet or smart phone (in the future, it’ll probably just download into a chip implanted in our brains anyway).
  3. I didn’t have a car when I turned 16 vs. I got a new car for my 16th birthday
    1. So, compromise.  Millennials, why not give your kids a used flying machine?
  4. I paid my way through college vs. My tuition was paid for
    1. We can’t all live off scholarships or in the back of our cars; but we can all let our kids pay for themselves while saving up a nice nest egg for our golden years.
  5. I got a job in my field right after graduation vs. I took a year to find myself
    1. Sure, the job market probably sucked when Millennials graduated.  A year doing nothing probably sounded great after 16+ years of school.  But hard work is it’s own reward…or so I’m told.  I’m sure in the future, we’ll just have robots for all the menial jobs anyway.
    2. Living in your parents’ basement is great…until you want to bring a date home…

Sure, not all of these apply to everyone.  Of course, they’re generalizations; if they weren’t, they would hit too close to home and wouldn’t be funny (…or would they be funnier? [what’s the sound of one person laughing? {this blog}}).

One Response to Millennials vs. Baby Boomers

  1. Ah yes, the generational differences. Music vs Noise. Musicals vs Reality TV. There is so much that separates the generations and so much more that binds them together.
